If you’re thinking that real estate classes will open up new doors as far as a career goes, you are right. What you may not know however is that becoming a real estate broker in Illinois can eventually lead to a host of other opportunities as well. Here are a few career paths that many seasoned brokers take to further enhance their earning potential:
GRI Designation-
This designation is considered the “gold standard” among real estate agents, and stands for “Graduate Realtor® Institute.” This is a nationally-recognized designation that is given after additional education and training has taken place.
Real Estate Appraiser-
The Illinois Property Assessment Institute is responsible for issuing appraiser licenses. This agency also approves all continuing education courses for appraisers as well. Although it’s possible to become an appraiser without obtaining a real estate broker’s license first, many people nonetheless find that working for some time as a Realtor® provides them with invaluable experience that helps them to succeed in this career.
Prelicense Instructor-
The Illinois Association of Realtors® provides a special exam to brokers who wish to become prelicense instructors. Those who achieve a score of at least 75 on this test are eligible to become instructors. In addition to test scores, the board looks at an individual’s previous experience as a Realtor®. Those who are licensed to practice law or have teaching experience are highly sought after when it comes to finding instructors.
Managing Broker–
Those who supervise other brokers are given the designation of managing broker. This requires:
- an active real estate license for two out of the past three years
- an additional training course
- passing a licensing exam given by the Illinois Board of Realtors®
