Live Classes Versus Self Study Programs

With technology growing increasingly accessible, there is also a higher demand for digital learning and self-study programs. This is not to say that traditional classroom courses are obsolete. There are pros and cons to each option. What is important is for the individual to understand is which learning method works best for them.

Live Classes – Advantages

  1. Teachers –

Access to experts. Students can engage in discussions and have their questions answered in real time. This is perfect to ensure that any wrongs or discrepancies are addressed and that the correct information is applied moving forward.

  2. Groups –

A live classroom setting allows students to engage in meaningful conversations regarding the subject matter. Working in groups and interacting with peers can provide great networking opportunities as well as different perspectives.

  3. Classroom –

A classroom environment provides students with a quiet place to concentrate and focus. The classroom helps to block out all outside distractions.

  4. Structure –

A live class program is scheduled, set days that an individual can plan their availability around. Students enrolled in this type of program tend to stay on track with their tasks by following along to a syllabus.

Live Classes – Disadvantages

  1. Schedule –

Live classes are set schedules and attendance is mandatory. This can become problematic when school and personal schedules conflict with each other.

  2. Travel –

A live class program requires a student to plan accordingly and may add time to their already busy days when having to account for travel time to and from class.

Self-Study Classes – Advantages

  1. Flexibility –

With work and family obligations, finding the time to fit classes into an already busy schedule can become hectic. Self-study programs allow students to study at their own pace around their own availability.

  2. Technology –

Self-Study programs often have additional resources available to students at any given time needed such as pre-recorded instructional videos, access to additional practice exams and handouts, PowerPoints etc.

  3. Options –

CREI’s self-study programs allow students to follow along to our online course calendar and attend any scheduled live class programs for free. This option provides students with live class options in addition to the self-study program and can further benefit a self-study program goer’s understanding of the material.

  4. Study Space –

Enrolling in a self-study program allows a student the opportunity to create their own study environment. This can assist the student in retaining information.

Self-Study Classes – Disadvantages

  1. Personal Accountability –

The student must hold themselves accountable and be responsible in making sure they are completing the assignments and scheduled readings. Self-study programs require plenty of self-discipline.

  2. Misunderstanding –

Students can sometimes misread or misinterpret the information. This can be problematic in their overall understanding and application of the course material to real life scenarios. Especially, since there is no instructor available to provide the correct answers.
